First of all, apart from the large Lovense logo blazoned across the wall above
the entrance way, you would have no idea that this event had any association
with my favourite sex toy brand. No giant replicas of their products, no use
of their brand colours. Just that one, admittedly huge, logo.
Secondly, there was no build up to this one. No social media campaign or
contests to be part of the team behind it. It was a relatively last minute
announcement which left little time for any sort of anticipation to build.
From that reason, I was actually expected a much lower turn out than for their
previous events.
Why is that? Because Halloween is one of those days of the year where people
like to plan what they are doing in advance and, with their being a fair few
other parties already announced for the spookiest night of the year, I felt
that many would simply have already committed to partying elsewhere and with
other people.
I'm not ashamed to have been wrong though, as it was yet another massive turn
out. But, just like with the Summer Rave, it did feel like there was less
enthusiasm from people to need to be there. Indeed, I get the sense that some
people are now deliberately choosing to stay away as they see these parties as
little more than a chance for the community to brown nose all of the 'celebs'
they may get to meet there, but even those seem to be dwindling in numbers
with each passing event.
Gizmo and Lisa were there, of course, living life large as they always do at
these parties. But who else was there of note? To be honest, not really anyone
who you would see at an average Strip N Rock party on a regular Wednesday
evening.
As the glitz and glamour that I like to associate with these parties continues
to wane, I still stand by the sentiment expressed on the podcast episode in
which we discussed the Summer Rave party. They need to try something a bit
different to reignite the excitement of these events. Perhaps, picking
Halloween as a theme was an attempt to do that but I'm not quite sure that was
the right kind of something different.
It's hard to imagine such a well attended event getting lost amongst all the
other parties but it kind of did. An emptier slot on the calendar where the
party is the primary thing happening on an otherwise uneventful night would
truly make it into more of the 'must attend' event that we expect these
parties to be.
And just to revisit the Halloween theme for a moment, the room was bang on,
with all the usual trappings that your would expect. It was fantastically
decorated. But what was going on with the music, at least during the time that
I was there. Why would use pick EDM for a Halloween party? Halloween just
demands something dark, sinister or nasty. It just screams out for some metal,
goth or industrial. That would really set the spooky tone.
EDM, sorry just not for me and it really killed the atmosphere of the room.
And that's not to slight the DJs, who I'm sure did a great job. It was just a
bafflingly wrong choice of genre for a night when it should be very easy to
get right.
The music aside, I did enjoy myself though. It was especially fun to see the creativity of many of the costumes. And for these sort of things I do like to play a little cosplay bingo with myself. I make mental list of all the super popular characters or whatever that I think people may dress up as and then try to tick them off as I see each one. To no-one's surprise, Harley Quinn was a popular choice once again. However, there were a few choices that came right out of left field. My favourite being a couple of members of the Simpsons family.
I don't really have much else to say other than that I look forward to seeing
what they do for the next Lovense mega-party and, while I hope they do
something fresh and exciting with it, I do hope it returns to being a bit more
themed around the Lovense brand and the more sexual side of the community.
